Skardu Valley
Verified FeaturedAbout Skardu Valley
Skardu is the gateway to the world's mightiest mountains — K2 (8,611m), Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I & II — all accessible from here. At 2,228 metres above sea level in Gilgit-Baltistan, Skardu is surrounded by the Karakoram Range and the Indus River. It is home to Shigar Fort, Shangrila Resort (Lower Kachura Lake), Satpara Lake, Deosai National Park, Khaplu Palace, and the famous Cold Desert. The city itself is a hub for mountaineers and trekkers heading to K2 Base Camp.

Ultimate adventure destination
Skardu has everything — mountains, lakes, forts, deserts. I spent 7 days and didn't see half of it. Deosai Plains at sunset with brown bears in the distance is a memory I will never forget.
K2 — the Savage Mountain up close
As a mountaineer's base, Skardu is world-class. The Shangrila Resort on the lake is beautiful. Cold desert is unexpected and unique. Flight from Islamabad on a clear day over Nanga Parbat and K2 is jaw-dropping.
Requires time and patience
Weather can be unpredictable — our Islamabad-Skardu flight was cancelled twice. Plan buffer days. But once you arrive, the beauty is overwhelming. Satpara Lake is incredibly peaceful.
